Nature Morte Berlin freut sich die erste Berliner Einzelausstellung der Künstlerin Mithu Sen anzukündigen.
Mithu Sen, als Malerin ausgebildet, arbeitet in ihren ort- und zeitbezogenen Installationen mit verschiedenen Medien, unter anderem mit Skulptur, Video, Sound, Design, Zeichnungen und ansatzweise sogar Poesie. Obwohl der Großteil ihres Werks aus Papierarbeiten besteht, sind ihre Arbeiten konzeptionell und häufig interaktiv.
Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung steht die großformatige Serie Nothing Lost in Translation, die Sen während eines Aufenthalts in Japan produzierte und welche als Teil der Ausstellung Emotional Drawing im Nationalen Museum für Moderne Kunst, Tokio gezeigt wurde und danach auch in Kyoto und Seoul gastierte. Die Serie ist von japanischer Popkultur, insbesondere erotischen Mangas, inspiriert und konfrontiert Betrachter mit viszeralen Repräsentationen von Körpern, die in den Zeichnungen zu hybriden Kreaturen verschmelzen.
Mithu Sen verwischt die Grenzen zwischen Realität und Fiktion und integriert Fragmente von Selbstporträts in ihre fantastischen Kreaturen, um die Konventionen von klassischen Selbstinszenierungen durch Charme und Humor zu hinterfragen. Ihre Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Distanz und Intimität und beschäftigen sich mit Identitäten, Sexualität und Gender.
Mithu Sen wurde 1971 in West Bengal geboren und erhielt ihren BFA und MFA in Malerei in Santiniketan. Sie studierte zusätzlich in Glasgow und machte Residenzen in New York, Brasilien, China und Kenya. Sie hatte Einzelausstellungen bei Nature Morte und dem British Council in Delhi, sowie in der Galerie Chemould in Mumbai, Bose Pacia in New York, Krinzinger Projekte in Wien und Suzie Q Projects in Zürich. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Delhi.

Nature Morte is pleased to present Mithu Sen's first solo exhibition in Berlin, Nothing Lost in Translation.
A trained painter, Mithu Sen now works in various media, making site and time specific installations with sculpture, video, sound, design and drawings, even dabbling in poetry. Although much of her oeuvre is on paper, her work is conceptual and often interactive.
Forming the centerpiece of the exhibition, the series Nothing Lost in Translation is the product of Mithu Sen's residency in Japan in 2008. During this time she made works for the exhibition Emotional Drawing at The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, which then traveled to Kyoto and Seoul. Drawing from local and popular culture—most noticeably erotic Manga—the series confronts us with visceral representations of bodies fused into hybrid creatures.
Blending fact and fiction, Sen incorporates representations of herself alongside her fantastical creations, complicating conventional representations of the self with humor and charm. Swinging between distance and intimacy, her works deal with the politics of identity, sexuality and gender.
Born in 1971 in West Bengal, Mithu Sen earned her BFA and MFA in painting at Santiniketan and studied in Glasgow as well. She has had residencies in New York, Brazil, China, and Kenya. She has held solo exhibitions at Nature Morte and the British Council in New Delhi, Gallery Chemould in Mumbai, Bose Pacia in New York, Krinzinger Projekte in Vienna, and Suzie Q Projects in Zurich. She lives and works in New Delhi.
