M. Pravat: "Under Construction"
December 10 – 28, 2008

Nature Morte is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by the Delhi-based painter M. Pravat. The works on view are all watercolors on paper, many in large scale.

The artist's previous exhibitions have been of large-scale oil paintings of domestic interiors, usually void of people, concentrating on specific elements such as furniture, draperies, mementoes or carpets. These painted tableaux implied some sort of disjointed narrative, were pregnant with meaning yet oddly undelivered.

The works on view at Nature Morte Annex break new ground as they focus on architectural structures in the process of their construction. The subject is more light, space and geometry than the previous works. They leave behind the references to Indian middle-class life and look at the urban environment as a series of sculptural experiments, closer to Constructivist and Installation Art. In these works, M. Pravat's sketches the most solid of structures with the most fluid of mediums, resulting in exercises in a balanced tension.

M. Pravat was born in Calcutta in 1972 and presently lives and works in New Delhi. He received both BFA (2002) and MFA (2004) degrees in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. He has held two solos shows of his works at the Anant Art Gallery in New Delhi and, most recently, an exhibition at Art Musings in Mumbai.

Nature Morte Annex is open Monday through Saturday, from 10am to 6pm and closed on Sundays. For more information, please contact Geeta Bajaj at (011) 4174-0215 or Rajeev Dhawan at (011) 2956-1596. For directions to the gallery, please contact Monica Singh at (011) 4655-7472.
